Clomiphene citrate, commonly known as Clomid, is a medication widely used in fertility treatments. It works by stimulating the release of hormones necessary for ovulation in women who have difficulty conceiving due to ovulatory disorders. By blocking estrogen receptors in the brain, it triggers the pituitary gland to produce more follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), which are crucial for egg development and release.
Clomid is also used off-label in men with low sperm counts or poor sperm motility. It can stimulate testicular function, potentially improving semen quality. While generally effective, Clomid use requires careful monitoring by healthcare providers due to potential side effects such as mood swings, visual disturbances, and a small risk of multiple pregnancies in women.
